Baccarat looks elitist but is one of the simplest casino games there is – with a surprisingly low house edge. You make exactly one decision per round: bet on Player, Banker or Tie. Everything else runs automatically by fixed rules.
The goal
Two hands are dealt – Player and Banker, two cards each. The hand closer to 9 points wins. You are not “the player”: you only bet on which hand wins.
Card values
- 2–9 count face value
- 10, Jack, Queen, King count 0
- Ace counts 1
If a hand exceeds 9, only the last digit counts: 7 + 8 = 15 → counts as 5. Busting is impossible.
How a round plays out
- Bet on Player, Banker or Tie.
- Both hands receive two cards.
- If either hand shows 8 or 9 (a “natural”), the round ends immediately.
- Otherwise the third-card rule kicks in – automatically: the Player draws on 0–5 and stands on 6–7. Whether the Banker draws depends on its total and the Player’s third card – a fixed table the dealer executes from memory. What you need to memorize: nothing.

The Banker bet wins most often because the bank draws last, knowing the Player’s card. The casino keeps 5% commission on Banker wins – and it’s still the best bet in the game.
Three rules to start with
- Bet Banker. A 1.06% house edge is among the best any casino game offers.
- Ignore the Tie bet. 14.36% house edge – the 8:1 payout is a trap.
- Ignore pattern displays. The “roads” and scorecards show the past; every round is independent. They’re decoration, not information.
